Madison Keys Continues To Impress As Top Seeds Struggle At Indian Wells

Written by Oluwaseun Oyediji

The Indian Wells Masters rolled into the Round of 16 this week behind early upsets and a few early-season narratives returning to the surface.

More Details

American Madison Keys is having her best run ever at the tournament, making it into the quarterfinals as the No. 25 seed. She will face No. 3 seed Iga Świątek on Wednesday night.

The surprise of the tournament so far might be 31-year-old Petra Martić, who defeated Emma Raducanu to earn a date with Simona Halep in the quarterfinals.

Raducanu was up by both a set and a break before a collapse in the second set allowed the Croatian, ranked 79th in the world, to take control of the match.

After the match, Raducanu opened up about a nagging injury that is causing her problems: “It was a tough one not being able to serve full out, so I was having to work so hard just to hold. I’ve just got to get stronger.”

Those results have amounted to the story of the event: Few top contenders are playing their best tennis, and the competitiveness of the WTA is shining through the cracks.

World No. 3 Aryna Sabalenka, No. 8 Karolina Pliskova, and No. 9 Garbiñe Muguruza each lost their first match of the tournament — Sabalenka to No. 122-ranked Harriet Dart.
No. 10 Ons Jabeur, former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka, and 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko each lost in the second round.
World No. 1 Ash Barty and No. 2 Barbora Krejčíková are not competing.

Meanwhile…

So far, Indian Wells has been more about what is going wrong than what is going well.

But Madison Keys continues to impress in 2022, and many other contenders are walking away with a promise to improve.
