Reports strongly suggest Manchester City are keen to sign RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba as a defensive reinforcement for the upcoming 2025-26 campaign.

This interest comes after Pep Guardiola’s team secured a 5-2 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday, a match where they had to erase a 2-0 deficit.

Despite being the reigning champions, the Citizens are currently fifth in the league standings with 55 points, just a single point ahead of Chelsea in sixth. This precarious position means they are in a fight to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League.

While injuries to important players can partly explain the champions’ underwhelming performances, it’s highly likely they will need to make significant investments in new players during the summer transfer window to seriously compete for the title next season.

According to reports from Fichajes, RB Leipzig’s central defender Lukeba is a primary transfer target for City. The report further suggests that the Citizens are willing to offer £60 million to acquire his services. While Lukeba’s time with Leipzig has seen both highs and lows, his team’s Champions League qualification is in jeopardy.

Currently fourth in the Bundesliga, they hold a slim two-point lead over Mainz 05, potentially ending a seven-year streak in the competition.

Man City could significantly benefit from Lukeba’s specialized defensive skills in preventing dangerous counter-attacks, provided they can keep him healthy.

The Frenchman has already missed 14 games this season due to two muscle injuries, including a lengthy 58-day absence with a hamstring strain. Meanwhile, Manchester City’s Premier League hopes for next season will receive a significant lift with the return of Ballon d’Or winner Rodri.
