Manchester City And Bayern Munich Serious About Maignan, Milan Consider Polish Goalkeeper As His Replacement

Written By Onyeka Daniel

It promises to be a year of change for Italian giants AC Milan after they parted ways with their manager, Stefano Pioli, this is after they had ended the season trophy less, their second in a row. Consequently, there are reports that the team could wear a new look heading into next season as some of their stars have been linked with an exit.

More Details

First, Olivier Giroud has already moved to the MLS while the future of Theo Hernandez and Mike Maignan remain uncertain at this point. But first, the club will announce the appointment of Paulo Fonseca as their new manager before approving any exits and signing as the former Lille coach is not expected to protest much against the sales of players.

This is why it seems like the Rossoneri are preparing for life after Maignan amid growing speculation linking the Frenchman with a move to Manchester City. Calciomercato journalist Daniele Longo reveals the Italians have initiated talks with Nice over Polish goalkeeper Marcin Bulka.

Maignan has developed into one of Europe’s most highly-rated stoppers in Europe since swapping Lille for Milan in 2021. The 28-year-old has two more years left to run on his contract at San Siro. However, he could leave the club this summer.

Despite genuine ambition to tie their first-team stalwart down to a new deal, Milan can’t meet Maignan’s wage demands. On top of that, Pep Guardiola sees the France international as an ideal replacement for Ederson. The Brazilian could depart the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Several Saudi Pro League clubs have shown interest in Ederson. Even though he’s only 30, the ex-Benfica man could end his seven-year association with the perennial Premier League champions to find a new home in the Middle East. And Milan could pay the price. Replacing Maignan would be an uphill task.

During their farewell speeches, Stefano Pioli and Olivier Giroud urged Milan to go above and beyond to keep hold of their star goalkeeper. Unfortunately, if Man City come knocking on the door, it would probably be the end of Maignan’s career at Milan. Finding a goalie of his quality to fill the vacancy would pose a considerable challenge.

However, the wheels are already in motion. Geoffrey Moncada has made exploratory contact with Bulka’s camp. The Milan chief executive wants to understand the deal’s feasibility. German club, Bayern Munich are also targeting the former Lille goalkeeper as they look to replace their aging captain, Manuel Neuer.

The Lombardy club will be looking for at least €60 million for the player, while his exit could mean that Hernandez would stay. He’s also a target for the Bavarians, who want him to replace Alphonso Davies, should the latter eventually secure a move to Real Madrid this summer.

Meanwhile…

Gazzetta dello Sport reports Ligue 1 side Brest have agreed to sell Lilian Brassier, a transfer target for Milan and Bologna. Milan are looking for defensive reinforcement in the summer transfer window and Brassier is a long-time target of the Serie A giants.

Milan had already been linked with the 24-year-old centre-back in the January transfer window when the return of Matteo Gabbia from a loan spell at Villarreal was the only reinforcement for Stefano Pioli. According to Gazzetta, Brest have decided to sell the French defender who is appreciated by the soon-to-be Milan coach, Fonseca.

The report claims that the asking price for Brassier is not higher than €12m, but Bologna and Wolfsburg have already made their moves and the Bundesliga side are now leading the race. However, Wolfsburg won’t play in the Champions League next season so Milan still have a chance to sign the central defender although the Rossoneri’s priority will be to sign a new centre-forward to replace Giroud.
