Manchester City End Chelsea’s League Cup Dominance

Written by Oluwaseun Oyediji

Manchester City Women ended Chelsea’s dominance of the Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup and lifted the trophy for the first time in three years after an emotional second-half comeback led by Caroline Weir saw them claim a 3-1 win against the Blues.

More Details

Chelsea entered the game looking for their third successive triumph in the competition, but ended up handing the trophy they had held since 2020 to City after a sweet second in 45 minutes was heavily punished by the team by Gareth Taylor.

The Blues’ poor second-half performance was particularly surprising given they had the upper hand in a frenetic first half, which saw Sam Kerr give them the lead after a mix-up between Ellie Roebuck and Demi Stokes in the 34th minute.

Manchester City were a different team after half-time and blew Emma Hayes’ side away with two Caroline Weir strikes, which came either side of a poacher finish from Ellen White.

Chelsea FC Women will now focus on the Barclays English FA Women’s Super League (WSL) after losing the Continental Tyres League Cup as well as crashing out of the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage.

There is also the Vitality Women’s FA Cup for the Blues to defend after winning all domestic titles last season.

One thing is sure, Chelsea FC Women will not be able to equal last season’s feat of winning the WSL, League Cup, FA Cup, and Super Cup.
