Manchester City has officially joined Manchester United in participating in the inaugural Women’s World Sevens tournament scheduled for May.

More Details

This seven-a-side event will take place from May 21 to May 23 in Estoril, Portugal, just three days prior to the Women’s Champions League final, and features a substantial prize pool of $5 million (£3.76 million).

Manchester United had previously announced their participation last month, with manager Marc Skinner describing it as an ‘exciting opportunity.’

The two clubs from the Women’s Super League will compete against Bayern Munich, Roma, Paris St-Germain, Ajax, Benfica, and FC Rosengard in this eight-team tournament.

Therese Sjogran, the director of football for Manchester City Women, expressed pride in the club’s involvement in this ‘milestone moment.’

The tournament will commence with a two-day group stage, followed by knockout rounds and a final.

Depending on their progression, Manchester City could potentially play up to five 30-minute matches, with interim head coach Nick Cushing leading a squad comprised of first-team players.

It is worth noting that City recently missed out on a Champions League spot for the upcoming season after a 2-2 draw with their city rivals, Manchester United, on Sunday.
