For the new season, plans are already underway to strengthen the team and while it will be hard to find a player that can come into the team and claim a starting shirt, the club wants to clear out some players that don’t have a future at the club.
Already, they have announced the release of defender Benjamin Mendy, who is currently awaiting a retrial for rape. The French defender, who signed for Man City back in 2017, has been released by the club after his six-year contract came to an end.

While it has yet to be officially announced by the club, the full-back appeared on the Premier League’s website of players to have been released. Joining from Monaco for a whopping £52million, Mendy was part of two title winning Pep Guardiola sides before he was suspended by the club in August 2021.
Back in January, Mendy was found not guilty of six counts of rape and one of sexual assault against four women. However, Jurors were unable to reach a verdict on another count of rape, and one of attempted rape against two other alleged victims after a lengthy deliberation period.
Another player who is expected to leave is club captain, Ilkay Gundogan, whose contract is set to expire next month. Gundogan had been silent on his future after leading the club to the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League trophies this season, with the Germany international linked with moves to Arsenal and Barcelona.
There’s also a report of an offer from Saudi Arabia and he could look to join the new wave of players moving to the middle East for one last big check before retiring.
The 32-year-old, who proved to be the man for the big occasion in City’s historic treble bid, won 14 trophies at the club, Including five league titles following his move from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in 2016.
Apart from these two, there are others that could find themselves playing their football away from the Etihad stadium. Bernardo Silva has been linked with a move to either PSG or Barcelona, while Kalvin Phillips could be used as a pawn to sign another midfielder (Declan Rice). Young defender, Sergio Gomez is also being tipped to leave in search of more playing time.

Caicedo’s representative Manuel Sierra revealed that the Ecuador international’s preference is to join a club in the Champions League – but is open to all offers. He said: “Let’s see [what happens]. We are open to listen [for all offers].”
Brighton are said to be demanding a significant fee (not less than €100 million) for Caicedo, who has scored two goals in 48 appearances since arriving from Independiente del Valle for just £4 million.
This new valuation may have been connected to reports that West Ham recently rejected an offer of €80m plus €10m in add-ons from Arsenal for Declan Rice. Of course, it should also be recalled that Brighton did reject a €70 million offer from Arsenal for Caicedo in January.
