According to reports, Manchester United and highly-rated youngster Kobbie Mainoo, who Chelsea were interested in during the January transfer window, have resumed contract negotiations.

On and off the pitch, the Red Devils have had a challenging season. With just 33 points, they are currently 14th in the Premier League.

Although there haven’t been many encouraging moments for supporters in 2024–25, there are still hopes that up-and-coming players like Chido Obi-Martin could help the team get out of its current predicament.

Similar opinions are held of Mainoo, a midfielder who solidified his status as a constant figure in the starting lineup during his breakthrough season.

According to the Daily Mail, negotiations for a contract extension have taken place, with Mainoo’s representation seeking a significant pay rise plus bonuses, amid rumours that Chelsea are interested in signing the 19-year-old.

Although there are still more than two years left on the 19-year-old’s current contract with the Red Devils, others argue that selling him would be better done this summer to keep him from reaching the end of his deal.

Given that the proceeds from the sale of homegrown players are considered pure profit, selling Mainoo would greatly allay United’s financial crisis.

For someone with his level of expertise, the midfielder’s alleged wage expectations are also exorbitant, and offering him such a salary would probably drive up the cost of any future contract to more than £200,000 per week.

It would be cruel to sell him before manager Ruben Amorim has had a genuine opportunity to assess how he fits into his system, though, as it would be hard to defend letting one of the team’s best players depart, much less for a opposition like Chelsea.
