Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has reportedly backed the club’s bid to bring Lille midfielder Angel Gomes back to Old Trafford.

More Details

Gomes graduated from Man United’s academy system but ultimately failed to force his way into the club’s first-team set-up. The 24-year-old was restricted to just 10 first-team appearances, before he left upon the expiry of his contract to sign for Lille in the summer of 2020.

Gomes spent time on loan at Boavista in Portugal, before he returned to France to establish himself as a key figure in the Lille squad. According to reports, Manchester United’s attempt to re-sign Lille midfielder Angel Gomes has the support of head coach Ruben Amorim.

Despite graduating from Man United’s academy, Gomes was never able to establish himself in the first team lineup. The 24-year-old was only allowed to make ten first-team appearances before leaving to sign for Lille in the summer of 2020 when his contract expired.

Due to his outstanding performances, the midfield player—who has four caps for England—has been linked to a possible departure from the French team in 2025. Several teams are interested in signing Gomes, whose contract with Lille expires at the end of the current campaign, including Manchester United.

Gomes acknowledged last month that it would be “difficult to say no” if he were given the opportunity to rejoin Man United. Since Gomes was first connected to the Red Devils, their manager has changed, which could mean the new manager is less eager to sign the Lille star.

The Sun claims that Amorim is supporting Man United in their pursuit of a deal to recruit their former academy player, who is considered a “major target.”

According to the source, Gomes is eligible to talk to teams in January about signing a pre-contract deal, and Amorim is “right behind the possible move.” The main forces behind Man United’s attempt to sign Gomes seem to be technical director Jason Wilcox and sporting director Dan Ashworth.

Given Casemiro’s uncertain future, the Red Devils appear eager to acquire a deep-lying midfield player. According to a recent source, Amorim is ready to make the Brazilian available for a transfer during the January window.
