Manchester United Legends Double Down As Martinez Feud Hits Breaking Point

The tension between Lisandro Martinez and Manchester United icons Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt continues to escalate following fresh remarks from the former midfielders.

More Details

Despite the criticism, Martinez earned significant acclaim for his standout performance in Manchester United’s 2-0 derby win over Manchester City. He was instrumental in a rigid defensive effort that effectively silenced Pep Guardiola’s attack.

Specifically, the Argentine defender was praised for neutralizing Erling Haaland—a feat that directly countered Scholes and Butt’s pre-match claims that the Norwegian striker would physically dominate and “run away” with the smaller centre-back.

Martinez was unapologetically blunt after the game, claiming the backlash provided him with extra motivation.

“Honestly, he can say whatever he wants,” said Martinez after last week’s derby win. I told him already, if he wants to say something to me, he can come to wherever he wants. To my house, wherever. I don’t care.

“And I think for me, I respect the relations when they want to help the club because everyone can talk on the television, but when you see [them] here face to face, no-one says anything in your face.

“So for me, I don’t really care what they say. I just put the focus on my performance, the performance of the team and I give everything to this club until my last day.”

In response to the World Cup winner’s comments, the former players have shared their perspective. During an appearance on Sky Sports News’ The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, Nicky Butt explained that his earlier comment about the Norwegian striker physically “picking up” the defender was intended as a metaphor rather than a literal description.

The veteran midfielder, who played for both Manchester United and Newcastle, further noted that athletes at top-tier clubs should be resilient enough to face media scrutiny without taking it personally.
