Manchester United’s Managerial Merry-Go-Round: Is Amorim The Next To Go?

Written by Albert Echatah

Manchester United’s hierarchy are reportedly concerned that head coach, Ruben Amorim, might choose to step down because of results on the pitch of play.

More Details

Since taking over last November, the Portuguese gaffer’s record in his first 49 matches has been 18 wins, 12 draws, and 19 losses.

Ruben Amorim’s future as Manchester United manager is uncertain due to his low 36.7% win rate and the team’s poor start to the season, which has sparked widespread speculation.

The club’s recent 3-1 loss to Brentford in the Premier League was their fourth defeat in seven games across all competitions this season. This poor form has left the Red Devils languishing in 14th place in the Premier League table with only seven points from six matches.

Despite these struggles, however, Manchester United allegedly has no immediate plans to sack Amorim, who is reportedly preparing to manage the team in the upcoming Premier League match against Sunderland on Saturday.

Manchester United chiefs reportedly think that manager Rúben Amorim might step down soon to protect his career, according to iNews. While Amorim is reportedly surprised by the relentless criticism—especially after the poor showing against Brentford despite a full week to prepare—minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is still determined to let the former Sporting Lisbon coach complete a full season.

Adding to the tension, Amorim has repeatedly stated he will stick with his criticized 3-4-3 system despite the team’s ongoing struggles. Manchester United hosts Sunderland on Saturday afternoon, looking to give their fans a positive result before the start of the October international break.

Historically, Red Devils have been dominant, winning four of the last five Premier League fixtures against the Black Cats, including both meetings during the 2016-17 season. However, Sunderland have managed some notable upsets, most recently a 2-1 victory in February 2016 and a 1-0 win at Old Trafford in May 2014, courtesy of a Seb Larsson goal.

Manchester United have played against Sunderland 145 times across all competitions, winning 65 of those matches compared to Sunderland’s 42 wins, with 38 draws.
