Chelsea’s head coach, Enzo Maresca, has confirmed that midfielder Cole Palmer has a groin injury.

More Details

Although Palmer was initially named in the starting lineup for the Premier League match against West Ham, he was taken out of the squad just before kickoff after he felt discomfort during the warm-up.

He was replaced by Estevao Willian, who put in a man-of-the-match performance in Chelsea’s 5-1 win. Despite concerns about the absence of their key player, the team’s dominant performance showed they could succeed without him.

After their scoreless draw against Crystal Palace, Maresca told reporters that Cole Palmer had a groin injury.

Maresca said they planned to take a chance on him, but Palmer couldn’t complete the warm-up and was rested. According to Maresca, Palmer “was not 100%,” and “felt something” during the warm-up.

“We preferred not to take any risks. We will see if it’s something important or not.”

When quizzed on specifics, the Italian gaffer added: “Groin. Palace game, he was not 100% but he tried to make a big effort for the club, the fans and the team. He tried tonight but it was not very good.”

Despite the tight turnaround, Chelsea’s win on Friday night showed they didn’t need Cole Palmer. The team now has a bit of a break, with their next match being the West London derby against Fulham on August 30.

Given that this is Chelsea’s only game until September 13, it might be a good idea to give Palmer a full rest. He’s had a demanding schedule since the start of the 2023-24 season, playing in 101 club matches and earning 12 caps for England. The 23-year-old also had a very short three-week break this summer, so some time off could be beneficial.
