After a trophy-laden decade at Barcelona, Mariona Caldentey has revealed that her move to Arsenal has brought her unexpected personal growth and visibility.

More Details

Speaking during Euro 2025, the 29-year-old Spanish forward reflected on how playing in England’s Women’s Super League helped elevate her profile — even before her Champions League triumph with the Gunners.

“At Barça, the spotlight is shared among so many stars,” she told El País.

“But here, I’ve felt more seen. Winning the Champions League and being named the league’s best player — that’s brought a noticeable change.”

Caldentey, who left Barcelona on a free transfer last summer, helped Arsenal defeat her former club in the Champions League final.

Her standout season has made her a Ballon d’Or contender, but she insists her focus is on collective goals: “Winning the Euros is what matters.”

Despite being used out of position by Spain coach Montse Tomé at the tournament, Mariona has remained influential, assisting twice in Spain’s opening 5–0 win over Portugal.

“I’m adapting,” she said of her role on the right wing. “And the teammates I have make it easier.”

The English game’s pace and directness have challenged her, she admitted, but she’s embraced the learning curve: “I prefer to pass the ball rather than run with it, but I’ll run if I have to. At Arsenal, the idea is still to play football.”

Spain next face Belgium, hoping to take another step toward lifting the Women’s Euro trophy for the first time in their history.
