Arsenal’s tug of war against Real Madrid for Real Sociedad ace Martin Zubimendi looks to be dragging on despite the English Premier League in advanced negotiations with the Basque club. A call from Los Blancos has put a potential switch to Emirates in jeopardy with the 26-year old favoring a move to the Spanish capital and with the appointment of Xabi Alonso who he idolizes, Arsenal’s chances seem to be fading away right in front of them.

More Details

Martín Zubimendi has decided to put a hold on his planned transfer to Arsenal amid fresh interest from Real Madrid. Reports indicate that the 26-year-old Spanish midfielder recently received a call from the Santiago Bernabéu club, suggesting that he might have the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream of playing for Los Blancos and reuniting with his idol, Xabi Alonso.

Alonso, now an influential figure at the club after been appointed manager is said to be eager for Madrid to secure Zubimendi’s signature, a sentiment shared by several directors who are reportedly supportive of the move as per Marca.

Conflicting report from Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano is that, despite Real Madrid looking likely to hijack the deal, all the paperwork are reportedly finalized, Martín Zubimendi is now awaiting a medical examination with Arsenal before his transfer from Real Sociedad is officially confirmed.

Although several other clubs expressed interest in securing his signature, Arsenal seems to have won the race, effectively quashing any lingering speculation about a potential move to Real Madrid. At this point, the only potential obstacle to the transfer appears to be a failed medical, which could derail the move at the last minute. Otherwise, everything seems to be set for Zubimendi to join Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side appear ready to trigger Martín Zubimendi’s €60 million release clause, with reports indicating that personal terms have already been agreed upon between the player and the club.

Meanwhile, it remains uncertain whether Real Madrid would be willing to meet the full release clause themselves. Historically, the Spanish giants have been cautious about paying fees they consider inflated and have often walked away from potential deals for that reason. However, recent acquisitions such as Dean Huijsen for €60 million and Trent Alexander-Arnold for €10 million may signal a shift in their transfer strategy and a greater willingness to invest heavily in top talent.
