Massive Clear-out Looms At Barcelona

Written by Onyeka Daniel

La Liga giants, Barcelona are trying to put the disappointment of the past season behind them. The club faltered towards the end of last season when the cracks in the squad started to manifest.

Newly elected president, Joan Laporta has started his reign with a series of signings as he tries to avoid a repeat of last year’s mistakes in the new season.

Having brought in Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia on free transfers, coupled with the recall of Emerson Royal from Real Betis, the club is also working on the renewal of their talisman Lionel Messi. Barca seem to know which direction they’re headed for the in new season.

The situation has however created another headache, with the number of players in the squad going above thirty and with preseason set to start in two weeks time, there is an urgent need to move some players because La Liga clubs are only allowed to register 25 first team players in a season.

There is also the need to reduce the overall salary bill of the squad. Mundo Deportivo reports that Barca are in the process of moving several players either outrightly, via loan, or as part of exchange deals for players of other clubs.

Charles Alena, Todibo and Moussa Wague are the likely candidates to be sent out on loan in order to get more playing time. Time will tell if the new president and the management at large are fixing a round peg in a round hole or setting themselves up for another disaster.
