They have already picked up one free agent, former Atletico Madrid centre-back Mario Hermoso. The business does not end there, though, as Chris Smalling is expected to sign for Saudi Pro League side Al-Fayha, which has led the Giallorossi to signing Hummels, who is still available as a free agent.

The former Dortmund and Bayern Munich centre-back is expected to sign a one-year contract, with an option for an extra year which will be triggered automatically if he makes a certain number of appearances this season.

The 35-year-old is set to put pen to paper on a deal that will earn him €2.5m in wages for the year. Both Hummels and Hermoso are expected to need some time to get up to speed and return to match fitness before making their Giallorossi bows.

He was previously in negotiations with another Serie A club, Bologna, with the Rossoblu hoping to sign him as a replacement for Riccardo Calafiori, who joined Arsenal earlier in the transfer market, but the two parties couldn’t find a agreement.

For Smalling, he is on the verge of leaving Roma after five years, with his medical and contract signing booked in Rome. The England international was signed on an initial loan deal in 2019 from Manchester United.

He was then signed permanently for a fee of €3m, and went on to make 155 appearances in all competitions, including 113 in Serie A with a respectable tally of nine goals. He is set to sign a lucrative two-year contract with the Saudi Pro League side club, according to reports.

The deal between the relevant parties was reportedly closed while the team were in Turin for Sunday’s 0-0 draw against Juventus at the Allianz Stadium, and Smalling was part of the team but didn’t make an appearance in the match.

Smalling is set to have his Al-Fayha medical today, and also sign his contract shortly afterwards in Rome. He will then travel to Al Majma’ah to get to work with his new teammates. His sale will save the club around €5m net. His contract was due to expire on June 30, 2025.
