Michael Bradley: Toronto FC Legend Tipped To Take The Reins At New York Red Bulls
Former Toronto FC captain Michael Bradley is reportedly the top candidate for the vacant head coaching position at the New York Red Bulls, according to a Monday report by Tom Bogert of The Athletic, a finding also corroborated by Waking The Red.

Bradley took over Red Bulls II in July, guiding the MLS Next Pro team to a championship in his debut as a head coach.

After retiring from Toronto FC in 2023 following a bitter end to his decade-long tenure—sparked by the firing of his father, Bob, as head coach and sporting director—Michael Bradley immediately moved into coaching. He began by assisting his father at Stabæk in Norway.
Additionally, the former USMNT captain, who earned 153 caps, had a short stint on Jesse Marsch’s coaching staff for the Canadian men’s national team, a surprising appointment given his history with the rival US team.
The New York Red Bulls (RBNY) have a significant connection to Toronto FC within their leadership, as the person currently responsible for hiring RBNY’s next head coach is Julian de Guzman, the club’s recently promoted Head of Sport.

De Guzman, a former Toronto FC and CanMNT captain and LaLiga player, was elevated to this new role at the end of October. His first major task is to replace former head coach Sandro Schwarz.
Schwarz was in charge for two seasons. Although he led RBNY to the MLS Cup final in 2024, the team experienced a steep decline this year, finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference with 43 points (12 wins, 15 losses, 7 draws). This poor result led to his sacking and marked the first time the club missed the MLS Cup playoffs since 2009.
Michael Bradley’s arrival at Toronto FC in 2014, heavily promoted as the “Bloody Big Deal,” followed nearly a decade of playing in Europe for clubs like Heerenveen, Borussia Monchengladbach, Aston Villa, Chievo, and Roma. He and fellow American Jozy Altidore became legendary figures for TFC, steering the team to three MLS Cup finals and securing a treble in the successful 2017 season.
