Milan Have Rafael Leao Injury Concern Ahead Of A Top Of The Table Clash This Weekend

Written By Onyeka Daniel

The 2025-26 season may have started on a positive note for AC Milan but they’re currently on a bad run of form that saw them lose their spot at the top of the table and without a win in their last two matches, a 2-2 home draw against Pisa and another 1-1 away draw against Atalanta.

In their last match, which was at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo, they were leading, thanks to an early goal from Samuele Ricci, which was his first for the club since making the move from Torino in the summer but they failed to get all three points as Ademola Lookman found the equaliser.

In that game, there was a hypothesis by a club legend, Alessandro Costacurta on Rafael Leao and his input to the team as he believes that the team plays better when the Portuguese star is not on the pitch and now, that theory is about to be tested this weekend.

This is because the Rossoneri have been left with a doubt surrounding their star forward as they approach the team’s crucial, top-of-the-table clash against Roma coming up this weekend as reportedly picked up an injury against Atalanta last time out.

According to reports from Gazzetta dello Sport, Leao underwent medical checks yesterday after being withdrawn at half-time on Tuesday night. While those tests ruled out a serious injury, it is understood that the Portugal international is struggling with inflammation in his hip.

Consequently, this makes him a doubt for the Roma game as the 26-year-old has only been fit enough to start in Milan’s last three Serie A matches of the season, following a calf injury that kept him out for over a month at the beginning of the season, an injury he picked up against Bari in the Coppa Italia.

He has scored three goals across those last three league starts and according to the report, Leao will be a guaranteed starter if he is fit and available on Sunday. With Christian Pulisic and Santiago Gimenez likely out of action for the Roma match, the manager will have to think of other solutions.

There could also be an opportunity for Christopher Nkunku, if not, for Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Pulisic and Adrien Rabiot are reportedly aiming to return to the group in time to face Parma on November 8 but there are other absentees too as the Diavoli have been dealing with plenty of injuries recently.

Summer signings Ardon Jashari and Pervis Estupinan have returned to first-team training on Thursday following their recent injury lay-off. In a related development, according to a report from Matteo Moretto, Bournemouth are determined to sign Álex Jiménez on a permanent deal from Milan.

The Premier League side are eager to sign Jimenez on a permanent deal from Milan, according to Italian transfer expert as the defender moved to England on an initial loan deal worth €2m last summer, and Bournemouth have an option to buy for €18m plus €5m add-ons, according to Calciomercato.

Bournemouth’s option to buy becomes an obligation to purchase if certain conditions are met, but the English side seem willing to sign him permanently regardless of their original agreement with Milan and Moretto has added a few more interesting details on the proposed move.

According to him, once Jiménez formally becomes a Bournemouth-owned player, Real Madrid will resume their financial control over their academy product, which means they’ll have a chance to match any offer Bournemouth receive in the future and potentially bring the 20-year-old back to the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid have the same sort of agreement with Como, as Nico Paz and Jacobo Ramon are formally owned by the Azzurri, but the Merengues have an option to bring them back in the coming years and for Paz, he might actually earn a return sooner than later if he can keep up his current performance.
