MLS: DP Spot Opens As Real Salt Lake Cut Ties With Diogo Gonçalves

Real Salt Lake have officially moved on from midfielder Diogo Gonçalves by exercising a guaranteed contract buyout, according to a club announcement on Wednesday.

More Details

The exit of the 28-year-old Portuguese player is a strategic roster move that frees up both a Designated Player (DP) spot and an international slot, giving the team significant flexibility for future signings.

To wrap up the deal, RSL exercised one of their two annual guaranteed contract buyouts.

During his time with the club, Gonçalves tallied six goals and five assists across 46 appearances in all competitions.

His stint in Utah followed a move from the Danish Superliga’s FC Copenhagen in August 2024.

Real Salt Lake is shaking up its roster just in time for the new campaign. By mutually parting ways with forward Rwan Cruz this week, the club has successfully cleared two Designated Player (DP) slots.

The Claret-and-Cobalt are set to kick off their 2026 season on the road against Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

The match is scheduled for February 21 at 7:30 pm ET and will be available to stream on Apple TV
