With goals from Simon Becher, Marcel Hartel, and Cedric Teuchert, St. Louis City SC finally found their shooting boots on Matchday 3 and defeated LA Galaxy, the defending MLS Cup champions, 3-0. It was their first win of the season under new head coach Olof Mellberg.

“Obviously, the first goals are also really, really nice.” Following the Sunday Night Football match sponsored by Continental Tire, Mellberg remarked, “I felt we deserved the win today.”

Their defence, which is commanded by MLS All-Star starting custodian Roman Bürki, has been the main factor in CITY’s early success. St. Louis is the only MLS team that hasn’t given up a goal in three games this season.
“It was so nice to see and I think the first two games have built confidence,” Mellberg said. “Thanks to some good individual defending and especially to Roman, we were able to get another clean sheet. But I think it’s a lot to do also with the first couple of games that they feel confident defending.”
Every offensive goal feels more valuable to the attacking players because they know Bürki will probably keep a clean sheet.

“He’s very important for us. I think [he made] three or four really good saves to keep us in the game and that’s why he’s the best goalkeeper in the league,” Teuchert said.
“When we stay good in the defense, we are always good to score goals because we have big players in the offense… I think when we [keep] clean sheets, we win a lot of games.”
Teuchert himself was a prime example of that message, contributing to CITY’s first goals of the season with a goal and an assist just before halftime. This season, St. Louis waited 224 minutes to score, tormenting a Galaxy defence that had trouble in transitions.
