In an upcoming match, Portland Timbers will be on the road to play San Diego FC, a team that is a strong contender for the Supporters’ Shield and is coming off a thrilling win.
More Details
This will be the Timbers’ second straight weekend facing a top-tier opponent, following their recent 3-2 home loss to FC Cincinnati.

Despite falling behind by three goals early in the game, the Timbers mounted a comeback with two second-half goals from Kevin Kelsy. However, their rally fell short, and FC Cincinnati secured the victory with a standout performance from their former player, Evander, who scored a goal and set up another.
Portland Timbers coach Phil Neville believes his team’s recent performance was better than the final score indicated. However, he also recognizes the reality of the tough road ahead for the Timbers.
Currently sitting in sixth place in the Western Conference, Portland faces a daunting schedule in their final eight matches.
They have two games against San Diego, which is tied for the lead in the Supporters’ Shield standings with FC Cincinnati. Additionally, they’ll play against three of their main rivals for playoff spots in the Western Conference: Minnesota, Vancouver, and Seattle.

“I think the two games against San Diego will be massive games for us, both home and away, and we’re really looking forward to it,” Neville said. “They’ve got something going there, and I think we need to go down there and we need to play at our absolute maximum.”
In a come-from-behind victory, San Diego defeated San Jose 2-1 last Sunday, despite being outplayed for most of the match. The turning point was the late substitution of striker Marcus Ingvartsen. In only his seventh MLS appearance—and first in over two months—Ingvartsen’s presence changed the game.
The Danish striker scored the tying goal in the 81st minute and then assisted Anders Dreyer for the winning goal just three minutes later. This performance was his best of an injury-plagued season and suggests that the team’s impressive expansion season could continue to improve.
