San Diego FC, an expansion team, has secured a spot in the 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs, becoming the first club to do so.

They clinched their playoff berth with a 0-0 tie against the Portland Timbers. With six games left in the season, San Diego FC is also aiming to make history by winning the Supporters’ Shield, which is awarded to the team with the best regular-season record.

They are currently in first place in the Western Conference with 53 points, just one point behind the Philadelphia Union for the overall lead. If they can maintain their momentum, they could break the record for most points by an expansion team in a single season.
San Diego FC is having a remarkable season, with several key players receiving recognition.
Anders Dreyer is a top contender for both the Landon Donovan MLS MVP and Newcomer of the Year awards, leading the league with an impressive 30 goal contributions (13 goals, 17 assists).

Alongside him, Chucky Lozano, the team’s first-ever Designated Player, has been a major contributor with 8 goals and 8 assists.
In the midfield, Jeppe Tverskov has proven to be one of the best defensive midfielders in the league, while Luca de la Torre has made a significant impact since returning to his hometown.
The team’s success is also a result of their long-term strategy, which includes giving young players a chance to play and develop through the Right to Dream Academy. This vision is guided by Mikey Varas, who is a strong candidate for the Sigi Schmid Coach of the Year award.
