As they enter the Western Conference final—their most important game yet—the ‘Caps are drawing confidence from these past successes. Head coach Jesper Sorensen confirmed that the team’s resilience is a hallmark, noting that even when trailing, the Whitecaps have consistently kept fighting.
“The team has just always kept focused and tried to pull back. Sometimes we have not been able to, but many times we have succeeded, also, late in games,” he said.
“I think that’s because people really have a strong belief in what we’re doing and the way we play and also in their teammates. That we have done it before means so much. So we have the belief that we can always do it again.”
Vancouver Whitecaps will face off against the expansion club San Diego FC in California on Saturday for a chance to play in the MLS Cup championship game. San Diego FC secured the West’s top seed with a 19-9-6 record, narrowly beating the Whitecaps, who finished second with an 18-7-9 record.

Vancouver Whitecaps’ path to the conference final—including a shaky second half after taking a 2-0 lead against Los Angeles FC last weekend—suggests they are ready for the pressure of a major match, according to Sorensen.
The match was incredibly dramatic: Star defender Tristan Blackmon was ejected with his second yellow card in the 95th minute. LA’s Son Heung-min immediately capitalized, scoring on the resulting free kick to tie the game at 2-2 and send it into extra time.
To make matters worse, the ‘Caps lost another defender, Belal Halbouni, to a knee injury, forcing them to finish down two players. Despite these setbacks in front of a sold-out crowd of nearly 54,000 at B.C. Place, the team ultimately defeated LAFC 4-3 in a penalty shootout.
