It promises to be a huge spectacle today at the Allianz Arena in Munich as Inter Milan face off against Paris Saint-Germain in the final of this season’s UEFA Champions league and for the Italian giants, there is more at stake as they face the prospect of going trophy-less this season.

More Details

After losing to Manchester City in 2023, they’ve reached their second final in three years and this time around, there is little doubt about their intentions and things could also work in their favor. Starting with the officials for this clash as Istvan Kovacs has been officially confirmed as the referee.

This should be a source of good omen for the Nerazzurri given that an Italian side has gone on to win each UEFA final that the Romanian official has taken charge of in his career to date as the 40-year-old official will be the man with the whistle.

He will be joined by Romanian assistants Mihai Marica and Ferencz Tunyogi, fourth official Joao Pedro Silva Pinhero from Portugal and VARs Catalin Sorin Popa of Romania and Johan Higler of the Netherlands. This will be the third UEFA final that Kovacs has taken charge of.

In a positive sign for Inter, an Italian team has gone on to win each of the other two UEFA finals that Kovacs has officiated: Atalanta’s 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the 2023-24 Europa League final and Roma’s 1-0 win over Feyenoord in the inaugural Conference League final in 2021-22.

Additionally, Inter also won their most recent game that Kovacs took charge of, which was the 1-0 victory over Arsenal in the league phase of this season’s UCL. Kovacs has refereed two matches involving PSG this season: A 1-0 loss against Bayern Munich in the league phase of the competition.

Then the second leg of their round of 16 tie against Liverpool, which the Parisians won on penalties at Anfield. Furthermore, Inter’s total revenues for the 2024-25 season could exceed €600 million if they beat PSG in the final, according to a report from Tuttosport.

Obviously, the chance to win European club football’s biggest trophy is the most important aspect. However, there is also the undeniable financial boost that comes from the competition. One way or another, Inter’s revenues from the UCL have already been sky-high this season.

They’ve already raked in €132 million by getting to the final as participation in Europe’s elite competition is more lucrative than ever thanks to the expansion of the format this season. Furthermore, victory in the final would be worth €6.5 million on its own.

Then, it would also mean participation in the European Super Cup – worth €4 million. Therefore, Inter’s revenues should be record-breaking this season. Hence, the Beneamata will almost certainly bring in well over €500 million and that figure could jump above €600 million with a win today.

In a related development, former Milan director Adriano Galliani insists that ‘any’ Italian who watches or enjoys football will be rooting for Inter against PSG. If successful, this will be Inter’s fourth UCL final success in the club’s history.

It will also be the first by an Italian club since Jose Mourinho’s treble win in 2010. Galliani, who spent 31 years with Milan in various roles including CEO under Silvio Berlusconi, has admitted that he will be among the non-Inter supporters rooting for Inter today.

In an interview with Sky Sport Italia, Galliani, now CEO of Monza, said that he has spoken with Inter President Beppe Marotta, who told him that anyone involved in Italian football should root for Inter. “He gave a strong speech, he’s positive and he’s right,” Galliani said.

“Any Italian football person will support Inter today.” He further added. Also, Gianluigi Buffon, former Juventus goalkeeper also revealed that he would be cheering for the Italian club despite being a legend for Inter’s rival, but he’s putting rivalry aside.
