Mutua Madrid Open: Swiatek Withdraws, Leylah Takes Her Position In Main Draw

Iga Swiatek has withdrawn from the Mutua Madrid Open due to a right shoulder injury.

The revised draw in Madrid after top seed Iga Swiatek’s withdrawal has seen the next player to be seeded, Leylah Fernandez take her spot at the top of the draw.

The world number one having won the WTA 1000 events of the season, will be missing the Mutua Madrid Open; a tournament that is the only big red clay tournament missing from Swiatek’s trophy case.

“I wanted to play it really badly, honestly. My heart was like, ‘Hey, Iga, this is Madrid.’ But sometimes you just have to make the smartest decision possible.”

The Polish 20-year-old looks to rest from the rigours of previous tournaments and be in good shape for Rome and the Roland Garros.

“We just thought that this is the best decision for me to recover properly because I didn’t really have time to recover after all these tournaments. After each of them I had like two days to chill out and then I had to come back to work and adjust to so many different things in every place.

“So basically, right now I feel like this is the best decision for us to get ready for Rome and have the peak of my form in Roland Garros.”

She won her fourth consecutive titles in Stuttgart taking her winning streak to twenty-three.

The 17th seed Canadian is a US Open finalist and a Indian Wells quarter finalist.

Leylah who makes her who first appearance in a WTA 1000 on clay will face former no. 9 Andrea Petkovic (Q) in Round one.
