Napoli Could Be Forced To Abandon Their Pursuit Of Kobbie Mainoo After Recent Development

It may have been a great ending to the year for reigning Serie A champions, Napoli as they added another trophy to their cabinet after lifting the Supercoppa Italiana, but the situation is about to get really ugly for them as they could soon be dealing with a transfer-related issue away from the pitch.

More Details

According to reports from Gazzetta dello Sport, the Naples-based club are under scrutiny from the independent commission that monitors the financial health of Serie A clubs and this will definitely affect their transfer plans this winter as they were already looking at several targets.

While celebrations continue following their Supercoppa success, concerns have emerged regarding Napoli’s compliance with financial parameters as the commission met on Tuesday to review the accounts of professional clubs across multiple sports, including football and basketball.

Initial indications suggest that Lazio and Como have met the required thresholds and will be free to operate normally in the transfer market as the Aquile had faced an embargo on signings in the summer, which greatly derailed plans after Maurizio Sarri returned to the club.

However, the Partenopei are among two clubs, alongside Pisa, that currently do not meet the criteria linked to the so-called “expanded labour cost to revenue” ratio. The threshold is set at below 0.8, a limit the Partenopei are reported to have exceeded, probably caused by their summer spending spree.

As a result, any club failing to meet the parameters would only be allowed to operate at net zero in the transfer market and this means that they could still register new signings in January, but only if any arrivals are balanced by equivalent departures from the club too.

The more serious risks could arise in the summer because from July 1, the indicator will become even more restrictive, dropping to 0.7 and failure to comply at that stage could lead to a full transfer ban, a scenario Napoli will be eager to avoid as they plan for the next phase of their project.

This new development has now complicated their plans for the January transfer window, casting doubt over any ambitious moves in the coming weeks and this is according to a separate report from the Corriere dello Sport with the report further stating that the move for Kobbie Mainoo could be abandoned.

Napoli are reportedly prepared for the scenario and are expected to operate only through loan deals, with any incoming transfers dependent on player sales. As a result, negotiations for high-profile targets have been placed on hold, including a potential move for Mainoo from Manchester United.

Consequently, their move for the young midfielder has now been effectively frozen and attention is therefore shifting toward departures with several squad players pushing for more regular football and could leave the club this January, that is if Antonio Conte sanctions their exit.

Starting with defenders Luca Marianucci & Pasquale Mazzocchi and then midfielder Antonio Vergara and forward Giuseppe Ambrosino all considered candidates to move on plus the reports that they’re also evaluating the future of Lorenzo Lucca after signing him from Udinese in the last summer transfer window.

The striker has attracted interest from multiple Italian clubs and is now being monitored by West Ham United, adding a Premier League dimension to his situation. Any January business will hinge on outgoing deals, making it increasingly difficult for the club to pursue expensive young talents such as Mainoo this winter.
