Since taking over as manager of defending champions, Napoli, former Inter Milan manager, Walter Mazzarri has been dealing with a host of injuries on his second return to the Partenopei, especially in defense. But it looks like fortune will now start to smile on him as there’s good news on the horizon.

More Details

Napoli defender Mario Rui partially trained with the rest of the team on Friday, while Eljif Elmas didn’t join the group due to a thigh injury. Napoli trained at Castelvolturno this morning ahead of their next Serie A game with Claudio Ranieri’s Cagliari at the Stadio Maradona on Saturday.

The Serie A giants have said In an official statement that Mario Rui partially trained with the team today, while Elmas was ruled out due to a slight thigh injury. Rui has missed the last five Napoli games across all competitions with a hamstring injury including losses to Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Juventus.

Mathias Olivera has missed the last four and is not expected to be back tomorrow, as the Uruguayan left-back trained separately in the gym today. Napoli are currently out of the top four with 24 points, one below Roma and Bologna in fourth. Inter are 14 points clear of the defending champions at the top of the Serie A table.

While it looks highly unlikely that they will be able to defend their title won under Luciano Spalletti, the club will be looking to make it into the top four at least to secure European football for next season.

Napoli are reportedly close to reaching an agreement over a one-year contract extension with Victor Osimhen, who is expected to have a release clause between €130m and €140m in his new deal.

Sky Sport Italia reports Osimhen is close to signing a contract extension with Napoli after a meeting between his agent Roberto Calenda and Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis this week. De Laurentiis had claimed that he had reached an agreement to extend Osimhen’s stay at the Stadio Maradona.

Osimhen’s current deal runs out in June 2025 and according to the report, the two parties are closing in on an agreement for a further season. Osimhen will get an ‘important’ pay rise and will have a release clause in his new contract, between €130m and €140m.

The two parties will meet again this week or next week but they are expected to agree on the final details soon and announce Osimhen’s extension pretty quickly, probably before or early in 2024. The Nigerian forward has recently thanked De Laurentiis and Napoli for their support following the famous TikTok chaos, calling it a ‘stupid error.’
