Written by Oluwadamilola Olaleye
The ongoing wage dispute between Kylian Mbappe and Paris Saint Germain doesn’t look to be coming to an end anytime soon despite a court ruling siding with the Real Madrid star. This financial embroilment stems from his departure from the club back in the summer. PSG contends that they had a verbal understanding with the player that he would not depart on a free transfer. In contrast, Mbappé is reportedly seeking €55 million in unpaid wages, covering the months of April, May, and June before his exit.

Kylian Mbappé’s legal representatives are escalating the ongoing financial dispute with his former club, Paris Saint-Germain by initiating multiple lawsuits aimed at resolving the matter. The French international is asserting that PSG owes him €55 million, comprising unpaid wages and bonuses and his legal team has reportedly filed a request with the Paris court to commence formal proceedings.
This ongoing situation between both parties suggests a disagreement over the financial terms of his final months with the Parisian club.

Thomas Clay, a member of Mbappé’s legal counsel, stated that the player had received authorization for a precautionary seizure of the disputed funds, which were subsequently frozen in PSG’s bank accounts on Thursday. A legal hearing to address the case has been scheduled for May 26th, indicating a significant step towards a judicial resolution of the financial disagreement between Mbappé and Paris Saint-Germain.

Delphine Vanderheyden, Mbappé’s lawyer stated as quoted by Cadena SER, that “The process began in February 2024 and, since then, PSG has not fulfilled its contractual obligations.” She further detailed the timeline of Mbappé’s tenure at the club, explaining, “He joined PSG in the summer of 2017, signed a contract that was extended in the spring of 2022 for two seasons with the option for another. Along the way, there were exchanges, discussions, pressure… The contracts were signed. There were two of them. Have they been fulfilled? Yes. To the end? Yes. Paid? No. What’s missing? €55m,” clearly outlining the basis of their claim.
The legal battle between Kylian Mbappé and Paris Saint-Germain over unpaid wages has seen previous rulings in the player’s favor. Notably, last October, the French league’s (LFP) appeals commission upheld an earlier decision that mandated PSG to pay Mbappé the outstanding amounts he was claiming.
Mbappé’s demands reportedly encompass three months’ worth of his salary in addition to the final installment of a loyalty bonus. Furthermore, Mbappé’s legal team has taken steps to involve European football’s governing body, UEFA. According to his lawyer, Delphine Verheyden, Mbappé has requested the French football federation to notify UEFA that PSG has failed to meet its salary obligations to the player.
Verheyden further suggested that if PSG is ultimately found liable for these breaches of financial duty, the club could potentially face severe consequences, including the revocation of their license to participate in the prestigious Champions League competition. This highlights the high stakes and potential ramifications of the ongoing dispute for the Parisian club.
