New English FA Rules That Will Result In More Yellow Cards For Players And Coaches Plus Longer Extra-Time

Written By Onyeka Daniel

Starting from this season, English football association is set to introduce new set off rules that would give the referees more prerogative to punish players and coaches alike. The changes are related to officiating and have been brought into the English game this season in a bid to clamp down on perceived issues in the game.

More Details

Early experiences have shown they they are set to have quite an impact on almost every club in the EPL, most especially Manchester United. Clampdowns are being enforced by officials with yellow cards handed out more readily as a result for certain offences.

This includes players being booked for kicking the ball away after a foul has been given, and managers also potentially being penalised for dropping below standards expected on-field and in the technical area. This has already been demonstrated with players booked in the Community Shield between Arsenal and Manchester City for kicking the ball away after a foul has been awarded.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta was also booked for gesturing to the officials that a yellow card ought to have been awarded. Games are also set to last longer as the exact time lost due to stoppages will now be added on at the end of matches, in a bid to deter time-wasting. Games lasting more than 100 minutes could now become the norm with more time added on, with all but two games in the English Football League (EFL) opening weekend going beyond this.

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has slammed new rules brought in to football for this season onwards and been backed in his stance by Rio Ferdinand. Varane said a meeting was held with the FA last week, where new rules were recommended to referees to exercise this season.

The United defender criticised the changes which have come in and believes they are “damaging” the game. He believes players’ views have not been heard on the changes and feels the schedule is already overcrowded and that these new rules will not help the matter.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Varane wrote: “We had a meeting last week with the FA. They recommended from the referees new decisions and rules. “From the managers and players, we have shared our concerns for many years now that there are too many games, the schedule is overcrowded, and it’s at a dangerous level for players physical and mental well-being. Despite our previous feedbacks, they have now recommended for next season: longer games, more intensity, and less emotions to be shown by players.

“We just want to be in good condition on the pitch to give 100% to our club and fans. Why are our opinions not being heard? “As a player I feel very privileged to do the job I love every day but I feel these changes are damaging our game. We want to be at our maximum level, the best we can be and put on amazing performances for fans to celebrate every week.

“I believe it is important that we, players and managers, highlight these important issues as we want to protect the game we love and give the fans our best.” Former United defender Ferdinand has backed Varane’s stance and called for all parties to find a compromise on the matter. He believes a balance must be struck. He responded:

“We need to find a balance 100%. Players and managers alongside the authorities planning & implementing for the betterment of the game. Finding a solution where all parties (including the fans) are happy must be the aim.” He further added. But it’s not just Varane that has kicked against this new rules, especially the addition of more time after extra-time.

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola also warned about the consequences of extending football matches after his side conceded an equaliser in the 101st minute against Arsenal in the community shield game yesterday. Eight minutes were added on in the second half at Wembley under new refereeing directives to drive out time wasting in the game, and after a clash of heads in that time required more stoppages Leandro Trossard’s drive was deflected in long after matches are usually finished.

City eventually lost out on penalties with Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri missing their spot kicks. Guardiola had already suggested before the game that adding extra time on was not the solution it was being hailed as, and was seen speaking to the official when eight went up on the board on Sunday.

The City manager said afterwards that too much time had been added on in a change that has not been agreed with players and coaches, joking that everyone would be playing overnight in high-scoring matches. “It was annoying but we have to get used to it. I had the feeling, not because we were winning 1-0, but that not much happened to extend it for eight minutes,” he said.

“It’s a good question for the international board and people because they don’t consult with managers and players and we have to accept it with this amount of games. Now the games will be 100 minutes. Nothing happened today and there was eight minutes. But Mikel Arteta has a contrary view. The Arsenal manager indicated that he is in favour of the general change. “It is about effective time and it is really good to do that because it was going too far. Now teams will think twice.” He said.

Meanwhile…

Spanish LaLiga side, Barcelona may have to look elsewhere in their pursuit of Portuguese midfielder, Bernardo Silva as the player is close to a contract renewal with Manchester City. Silva seemingly wants to resolve his future this week, and it looks as if that might be the case.

Barcelona had their first offer for him rejected, and despite the Portuguese reportedly asking Guardiola to be allowed to leave, is growing closer to a renewal. Guardiola has always maintained that if an acceptable offer comes in for Silva, then he will be allowd to leave for Barcelona. However with that prospect as of yet unfulfilled, Silva is looking at a new contract with City.

The 28-year-old’s current deal expires in 2025. Fabrizio Romano says that Silva will be sent an offer this week, and that tallies with a report from MD, which claims that Silva will not wait much longer for Barcelona to make an offer City can accept. Having rejected talks with City for the past two years, this time he will negotiate a new deal at City.

For Barcelona it would see the player that Xavi Hernandez has been keen to bring to the club for some time escape their clutches, although if Guardiola is true to his word, It might not change matters too much next year. However this summer it seems unlikely that it could happen.
