According to Sky Sports News, the Magpies have struck a deal with the reigning La Liga champions to sign the England international this month.

Personal terms are not expected to be an issue, according to the source, and Trippier will now go to the northeast to complete a medical before moving to Newcastle.

The Englishman will become the first player signed under Newcastle’s PIF regime, with defence a key area that Eddie Howe is eager to strengthen this month in the transfer market.

Newcastle could sign players to the backline, midfield, and central attack. After suffering a calf injury against Manchester United, Callum Wilson is projected to miss the rest of the season.

Trippier’s arrival does, in fact, usher in a new era for Newcastle. While signing the defender will not address the club’s difficulties, it does show that Newcastle have the financial power to recruit some big players this month.

A finalist at Euro 2020 with England, Trippier is a great addition to Newcastle’s squad and should be used as an example for what type of players the Magpies should be looking to sign in January.

The 31-year-old was a fan favourite amongst Atléti fans last season in their title-winning campaign, and Newcastle fans will no doubt be excited to see what the 31-year-old can bring to the fullback position.

Ángel Correa has reportedly spurned offers from the Premier League in order to extend his contract with Atlético Madrid.

Correa joined Atlético from Argentinian side San Lorenzo in 2014, but he did not debut until the following season as he recovered from a heart operation in New York City. His early seasons as a Rojiblanco featured several ups and downs, and he nearly joined AC Milan in 2019 amid a squad reshuffle.

But Correa elected to stay, and his 17 total goal contributions (as well as a career-high 29 starts in LaLiga) helped Atlético win the league. The 26-year-old has continued his consistent form this season, with six goals and four assists in 19 league appearances putting him on pace for his first double-digit scoring season.
