The victory lifts the Magpies to sixth in the standings and highlights the explosive offensive power they’ve showcased throughout the 2025-26 season. While the late victory sparked celebrations, the mood was dampened by a serious incident involving a key, long-serving member of the backline.
During the midweek match, 34-year-old Fabian Schär was stretchered off in the second half following a severe-looking leg injury.
The incident occurred in the 70th minute after an accidental collision with Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin. After receiving extensive treatment on the pitch, the Swiss defender was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

“I don’t know too much, I think it’s an ankle problem,” said Newcastle boss Eddie Howe via SunSport. “Fingers crossed, our thoughts are with him. I think he is at the hospital now,”
The experienced defender left the pitch to a standing ovation, though his leg was noticeably in a protective brace. His injury leaves manager Eddie Howe facing a defensive crisis, as Dan Burn, Emil Krafth, and Jamaal Lascelles are already sidelined.
With the backline spread thin, the club may need to move quickly in the January market to secure a replacement and save their season.Schär has been a cornerstone of Newcastle’s defense this season, making 16 league appearances and earning a place in the starting lineup on 11 occasions.
