Newcastle Star Reveals MLS Transfer Plan And Major Career Change Dream – ‘It Would Be Amazing’
Written by Patrick Echatah
Sean Longstaff, Newcastle United’s standout midfielder, recently revealed his current circumstances and future plans in an interview published in FourFourTwo this week.
More Details
With his contract set to end in June 2025, reports say that the 26-year-old will be on the move this summer. Sean’s younger brother, Matty Longstaff, signed a two-year contract with Toronto FC at the end of February.
Matty’s move to the MLS, which includes the option to prolong his stay until 2026, has fuelled conjecture regarding Sean’s interest in following him in Canada.
When asked about the potential of playing in Canada, Sean said enthusiastically, “Oh, a million percent. In a perfect world, this is how it would finish. “That is where I want to retire.” Despite his interest in a transatlantic move, Sean is still focused on his current role at Newcastle United, where he has been an important player this season.
Sean has started 22 Premier League games and made further appearances in the UEFA Champions League, establishing himself as an important asset for Newcastle. Sean has four goals and two assists in the Premier League this season, and his contributions have been critical to the team’s success.
Reflecting on his background and influences, Sean credits his father, David Longstaff, a former professional hockey player, with instilling in him a love of sports. While hockey has a unique place in the Longstaff family’s heart, football eventually became Sean’s preferred sport, thanks to his father’s coaching and encouragement.

Kevin Long has joined Toronto FC from Birmingham City, the Canadian based club announced on Tuesday. His deal is set to expire in 2024, with an option in 2025.
Along with No. 1 SuperDraft choice Tyrese Spicer and Honduran international midfielder Deybi Flores, the 33-year-old former Irish international is Toronto’s third offseason addition.
“We are thrilled to welcome Kevin to the Toronto FC family,” head coach John Herdman said in a release. “Kevin’s experience will be a welcome addition to TFC’s back line. He’s here to help rebuild the club and is hungry for success.”
