Newcastle United Star’s Return Uncertain As Season Nears End

Written By Albert Echatah

After spending the previous week overseas, Joelinton has returned to Newcastle United’s training facility in recent days.

More Details

Due to a knee injury he initially suffered in February, the 28-year-old has missed the Magpies’ past two games against Brighton & Hove Albion and Ipswich Town.

Joelinton was able to handle the problem when he returned to work in March. But 24 hours prior to the Ipswich match, the midfield player experienced severe agony, which led him to consult a physician.

Joelinton was also advised to miss the remainder of the campaign. The head coach of Newcastle has acknowledged that is probably the case, but he hasn’t completely ruled out a surprise comeback.

Prior to Sunday’s crucial Premier League matchup with Chelsea, Howe stated: “I saw Joe yesterday [Thursday] for the first time in a while. He’d been away getting treatment and returned to Brazil briefly, but he’s been back in Barcelona for another injection.

“I think he’s feeling pretty good. Whether we see him before the end of the season, I’m not sure.”

Last week, Howe stated: “The likelihood is it will be difficult [to get him back before the end of the season], I think, but with Joe, you’d never rule him out.

“I think he’s so motivated to try and come back, but a bit of discomfort in his knee last week just before the game so he sought a specialist opinion. That opinion was nothing serious, but he needed a period of rest.

“He’s now in Brazil, so we’ll wait and see if we can get him back before the end of the season. But the likelihood is probably not.”
