Graeme Jones has stood in as caretaker manager and oversaw a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace and a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea and the club are keen to appoint a high profile manager to take over on a permanent basis.
Several names have been linked to the job, from former Chelsea coach, Frank Lampard to Steven Gerrard and even Antonio Conte, who was recently appointed as coach of Tottenham Hotspur but it seems like they have finally settled on the choice of Unai Emery as their next coach.
Emery spent a season in charge of Arsenal before moving to Villarreal, he had also previously won the Europa League trophy on three consecutive occasions with Sevilla between 2013 and 2016, before winning it with Villarreal last season.
He’s currently the coach of Villarreal and the 49-year-old tactician is under contract at Villarreal until the summer of 2023, so Newcastle would have to pay a compensation package (about €6 million) in order to bring him to St James’ Park.
Meanwhile…
Unai Emery has come out to say he’s not aware of the possible interest in him by Newcastle United.
