Newest Signing To Miss First Game Of The Season As De Jong Continues To Hold Barcelona Hostage

Written By Onyeka Daniel

It could be a repeat of last season for Barcelona where they missed several players for some games at the start of the season and the same scenario played out in January with Ferran Torres.

More Details

Currently, the club have been unable to register their new signings like Lewandowski, Raphinha, Kounde, Kessie and Christensen and this could be the reason why they don’t want to announce the signing of Chelsea defender yet.

According to reports, Barcelona have completed the signing of Marcos Alonso from Chelsea for a fee reported to be in the region of around €8 million, including add-ons.

The club wants to register the players already on ground before announcing new ones, so as not to further complicate their wage cap.

Alonso is expected to compete with Jordi Alba for the left-back role for the coming season and he’s in all likelihood, going to miss their first game of the season against Rayo Vallecano at the Camp Nou on Saturday, but he’s expected to be in the team for their next game against Real Sociedad.

The Spanish defender will be announced next week and will sign a two-year contract with the option to extend it for another year with Barcelona, and has reportedly reduced his salary to fit the club’s wage cap.

Already the club are hard at work to reduce their squad as Nico Gonzalez has already left for Valencia, on a season-long loan move, following in the steps of Clement Lenglet and Abde Ezzalzouli to leave the club on loan with more players expected to follow suit.

Infact, the coming of Alonso will send another defender, Alejandro Balde out of the club, most likely on a loan move too.

Barcelona’s struggle to have their new players available for the first game of the new season may be much harder than they imagined as their plans to sell Frenkie de Jong continues to stall.

Meanwhile…

According to transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, English Premier League side, Chelsea are ready to meet every requirements in order to sign Barcelona midfielder, De Jong and they can even offer the player Champions League football, something he would have missed if he had joined Manchester United.

The Red Devils had agreed a fee of €75m plus add-ons for Frenkie with Barcelona in the middle of July but they’ve been unable to convince the 25-year-old Dutchman to come to Old Trafford. Now with Chelsea also interested, it all depends on the player and his decision.

But De Jong has previously stated his desire to remain at the Cam Nou and resist any attempt by the club to force him out. Should the situation persist, Barcelona will be unable to register their new signings, unless they activate a fourth economic lever and even that alone may not be enough.

With the risk of losing both Franck Kessie and Andres Christensen, if they fail to register the pair before their first game this weekend, due to a clause in their contract, Barcelona will be moving frantically with just two days left before their opening game of the season.
