Written by Oluwaseun Oyediji
Nicole Barnhart has announced her retirement from professional football (soccer).
More Details
The longtime goalkeeper began her career in 2006 with the California Storm.
She featured for FC Gold Pride and the Philadelphia Independence in the former WPS.
In the NWSL, she won two championships with FC Kansas City and featured for the Utah Royals and Washington Spirit.
“When I started playing soccer over 35 years ago, I just wanted to compete and have fun, but I quickly fell in love with the game,” Barnhart said.
“From that first moment onwards, soccer shaped my life and who I am. Saying goodbye to my playing career today is so much bigger than just closing a chapter. It’s the end of a lifetime of experiences— triumphs and, of course, blood, sweat, and tears. It’s the end of who I have been to make way for who I’m going to be next.

“To all of my incredible teammates, thank you for being a part of this journey with me. You pushed me to be better each day, and always kept it fun. It’s an honor to have shared the field with all of you, and even better to call so many of you friends.

“To my family, thank you for believing in me every step of the way. I always joke you had no idea what you were getting into when I first started to play, but you always supported my dream. It means so much to have shared so many successes with you in the stands cheering me on. I wouldn’t be here without you.
“To everyone who kept me on the field and playing for so long, your hard work and dedication are why I was able to keep going each day with a smile and unbreakable love for the game.
“I’m proud to have played a role in shaping the game into what it is today. I’ll always be a part of it because it’s a part of me. Stay tuned for what’s next 🙂 Until then, thank you.” She concluded.
Barnhart made 54 appearances for the United States (U.S.) women’s national team and was on the 2008 and 2012 gold medal-winning teams.
