NWSL Free Agency Heats Up

The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) free agency pool expanded by 22 players on Monday.

An independent arbitrator ruled in favor of the NWSL Players Association, almost doubling the number of free agents from 26 to 48.
Players originally won free agency status with the ratification of the league’s first collective bargaining agreement on Jan. 31.
All players with at least five years of service in the league become eligible for unrestricted free agency.
Players with at least three years of service are restricted free agents.
The NWSL and NWSLPA had been at odds over the interpretation of the free agency section of the league’s new CBA.
The issue hinged on team options, which predate any contracts signed in 2022.
A team option only empowers an NWSL club to make an offer for a player, not solidify a mutual agreement.

The PA argued that players with a team option in 2022 should be considered out of contract, and therefore free agents.
The arbitrator agreed, sending stars like Debinha, Tobin Heath, and Christine Sinclair into free agency.
Free agency officially opened in August, but with exit interviews wrapping up for many clubs, expect the transfer market to heat up in the next few weeks.

The midfielder took home the Ballon d’Or for the second consecutive year on Monday.
Putellas had 18 goals and a league-high 15 assists for Barcelona as she led the team to its third-straight Primera División title last season.
She missed out on the Euros with Spain after injuring her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in June.
“I’m very happy to be back here,” Putellas said in her native Spanish. “I’m pleased. A year ago, I was able to win, and it pushed me to want to be better.”
