NWSL: Gotham Break The Streak As Alex Morgan Snags Golden Boot

Even the 12th-place NWSL team’s end-of-season performance is worth celebrating.
More Details
Gotham FC broke their losing streak and played a spoiler in the season finale.
To put Gotham’s three goals against Portland in perspective, they accounted for almost 19% of the team’s 2022 regular season total.
Perhaps even more sweetly, Gotham denied the Thorns the 2022 NWSL Shield with the 3-3 draw.
“No one celebrates on our field except for us,” Ifeoma Onumonu said after the game “That would have been honestly embarrassing. Didn’t want that for us.”

The draw broke Gotham’s 12-game losing streak, which had already set a new league record.
With the result, the club avoided having the most losses in an NWSL season and became the first NWSL team to play a whole season without a draw.

Morgan’s 15 goals held up against a challenge from Sophia Smith, who scored a brace this weekend to keep things close.
It’s been an exceptional year for strikers in the NWSL, with five different players scoring in double figures for the first time.
Smith ended the season with 14 goals and three assists.
Debinha scored 12 goals, while Diana Ordoñez and Mallory Pugh each had 11.
The collective output is all the more impressive considering teams played two fewer games this season than in years past.
Morgan scored 15 goals in just 17 appearances between international absences and injury.
