NWSL: Has Time Run Out For The Spirit?

The Washington Spirit played their 14th match of the regular season last weekend, as the clock winds down on the reigning champions’ push for a playoff spot.

More Details

The Spirit sit at 10th in the NWSL table with 11 total points, having played at least one more game than every team outside of the league-leading San Diego Wave.

After a tough early schedule and no shortage of absences, the Spirit needed an emphatic win against the North Carolina Courage on Saturday.

The Courage were without outside back Jaelene Daniels, who refused to play due to her personal opposition to the use of rainbow numbers to celebrate North Carolina’s Pride Night.

Trinity Rodman scored a brace, opening the scoring in the 42nd minute and doubling her tally in the 56th.

Her goals were bookended by a score from Washington’s Tara McKeown, an answer from Chicago’s Brittany Radcliffe, and a goal from Diana Ordoñez.

Courage forward Ordoñez completed her own brace in the 62nd minute off a penalty, sealing the draw for both sides.

Both of these teams (North Carolina Courage and Washington Spirit) are talented and struggling to produce results.

The Courage sit in last place with 10 games played, with the Spirit just two games ahead of them.

It’s hard to imagine the playoffs without the reigning champs or the Challenge Cup winners, but margins are getting thinner by the day.
