The Kansas City Current have fired head coach Matt Potter just three games into the season, hours before the team’s Challenge Cup match on Wednesday.

The decision came as a result of “issues around his leadership and employment responsibilities,” according to a team release.
Caroline Sjöblom, who served as an assistant coach under Potter, immediately took over as interim head coach.
Potter had led the Current from last in the league in 2021 to the 2022 NWSL final, but after an aggressive offseason in the transfer market, the team began 2023 with three straight losses.
“We watch the play on the pitch, we keep a pulse on the locker room, and we are constantly evaluating ways to improve our club,” general manager Camille Ashton said in the release.

The Current had also garnered criticism for team operations in recent months.

Third-round draft pick Mykiaa Minniss claimed to have received “less than professional” treatment before she was cut from the club’s preseason roster.
The league and the NWSLPA had been made aware of the complaint and said they intend to investigate.
Whether the decision was shaped by on-the-field results or as yet unknown off-the-field issues, the Current has acted swiftly in an attempt to get back on track.
