NWSL Names 2024 Expansion Cities

After a long expansion bid process, the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) plans to add teams in Boston, Utah, and the San Francisco Bay Area, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

Utah and the Bay Area are scheduled to join the league in 2024, with Boston following at a later time.
Boston and San Francisco are reportedly set to pay about $50 million each in expansion fees.
Utah will pay an agreed-upon amount from the Royals’ folding in 2021, anywhere from $2 million to $5 million.

Previously, NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman had said that “over 30 investor groups” were interested in joining the league.
Utah and Boston have previously had professional teams — the Royals and the Breakers, respectively.

Crystal Dunn broke her silence last week on her husband Pierre Soubrier’s termination of employment with the Portland Thorns.

Soubrier was found to have given Thorns players medication containing codeine without doctor supervision, once without a player’s informed consent.
“There is a path forward and he is committed to the process,” Dunn wrote in a statement. “This road will be filled with growth and learnings.”
“Today, I am holding my hands up, apologizing, and holding myself accountable,” Soubrier wrote on his own Twitter last Thursday.
