After struggling to turn in-game dominance into results early in the season, OL Reign earned all six points in a two-game week, launching them into third place on the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) table.

Both games were close, as Seattle picked up 1-0 wins over Kansas City on Wednesday and San Diego on Sunday.

While the Reign raised eyebrows with impressive wins in the 2022 Challenge Cup group stage, their free-flowing style of play hasn’t always contributed to goals in the regular season.

Sofia Huerta has been the key to unlocking defenses from the outside back position, notching assists on both of the Reign’s goals this week, first to Bethany Balcer and then to Rose Lavelle.

The team has also relied on a very steady backline that has posted clean sheets in their last three games, as the partnership between Alana Cook and Sam Hiatt solidifies in the central defense.

The Reign also shored up their midfield for July’s international period, announcing the short-term loan of club legend Kim Little.

Little won two NWSL Shields with the club in 2014 and 2015 before eventually transferring to her new home club of Arsenal.

Before she returns to England for Arsenal’s preseason, the forward-turned-midfielder will be key while the Reign are missing Lavelle and Quinn during CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.

In the NWSL, quality on the ball doesn’t always turn into results without the right decisions in front of goal.

What Seattle is attempting is relatively unique to the league’s winning formula, and if they can keep clicking on offense, the sky’s the limit.
