NWSL: Portland Thorns Stick It Out
Written by Oyediji Oluwaseun
Portland Thorns battled to a 1-1 draw with No. 9 North Carolina Courage on Saturday, extending the No. 5-ranked side’s steady climb up the NWSL table.
More Details
Moultrie, 19, struck first with a powerful finish in the opening half, before Tyler Lussi leveled for the Courage in the 70th minute.
The goal was Moultrie’s 13th of the season — tying her with Jaedyn Shaw as the league’s all-time regular-season scoring leaders among teenagers.
Portland continues to make its case as the “best of the rest.” While No. 2 San Diego surged up the table with a 2-1 win over Bay FC, No. 1 Kansas City and now-No. 3 Orlando canceled each other out in a scoreless draw.

Despite losing stalwarts Christine Sinclair, Becky Sauerbrunn, and Meghan Klingenberg to retirement — and USWNT star Sophia Wilson to maternity leave — the Thorns have leaned on rising talents Reilyn Turner and Pietra Tordin up front, while midfield anchors Moultrie and Sam Coffey drive the attack. Coffey matched her 2024 scoring total last weekend with her second goal of the campaign.
