NWSL Sanction Clubs That Fostered Misconduct

The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) issued sanctions to teams found to be fostering environments of misconduct.

The Chicago Red Stars were fined $1.5 million, and the Portland Thorns received a $1 million fine Tuesday.
Racing Louisville were fined $200,000, the North Carolina Courage $100,000, OL Reign $50,000, and Gotham FC $50,000.
The Washington Spirit and the Kansas City Current did not incur fines.

The Spirit’s ownership and staffing changes were considered sufficient, and the Current were not formally found to have participated in retaliation against players.
The NWSL made clear it had no jurisdiction over U.S. Soccer to offer corrective action, despite former U.S. Soccer officials and staff also being named in the report.
