Expect developments to continue to emerge as the work begins of reshaping the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) after the bombshell Yates report last week.

More Details

With some time to reflect, sponsors are taking the next step.
A theme from two prominent sponsors has been to prioritize supporting the players over the clubs, at least in the short term.

Alaska Airlines, sponsor of the Portland Thorns and Timbers, announced that for the next quarter, they’ll be diverting sponsorship dollars to the NWSLPA emergency fund and youth sports in the Portland community.

Sherwin Williams, the sponsor of Racing Louisville, took a similar stance that in lieu of sponsorship, the company also donated to the NWSLPA fund.

As the league waits for the postseason to kick off and the joint NWSL and NWSLPA investigation to reach a conclusion, the union has a clear message: Go to games.

“I’ve never heard 1 player express wanting fans to boycott. In fact, it’s the opposite.” NWSLPA Executive Director Meghann Burke wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

At least three more cases of coach misconduct have emerged since Sally Yates’ report on abuse in the NWSL, U.S. Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone told CNN on Friday.

“One of the great things to come out of this report is that it is encouraging more people to come forward,” she said.
Parlow Cone did not provide details of the cases but said that she has forwarded them to the US Center for SafeSport and other authorities.

Safesport is an organization under the U.S. Congress that addresses abuse in Olympic sports.
The Yates report, however, found Safesport to be an insufficient safeguard or sole reporting system for abuse.
