NWSL: Washington Spirit Sign First Ever Italian Player
Written by Oluwaseun Oyediji
Washington Spirit have secured the signing of Italian forward Sofia Cantore on a three-year contract that extends through 2028, as initially reported by Mauro Munno in May.
More Details
Despite Cantore having recently renewed her contract with Juventus in January 2025 until 2028, the Spirit exercised her release clause—allegedly valued at over €300,000—to facilitate the transfer.
Cantore began her senior career with Fiammamonza in 2015 before moving to Juventus in 2017, where she became an integral part of their women’s team. She was loaned to Hellas Verona, Fiorentina, and Sassuolo to acquire valuable top-flight experience.
In 2022, Cantore endured a fibula fracture that kept her out of action for a significant duration. Since regaining her full fitness, she has made 64 appearances over the last two seasons.

“I’m very proud to join this important club and grateful for their trust in my abilities,” Cantore expressed.
“I’m excited to embark on this new chapter of my career as the first Italian player in the NWSL and can’t wait to collaborate daily with coach Adrián González and my new teammates. Additionally, I’m eager to challenge myself in this prestigious league! I look forward to joining the team after the Euros and celebrating together with the fans. FORZA WASHINGTON SPIRIT!”
“Sofia is a significant addition to this Spirit team as we continue to enhance our roster to compete for trophies,” remarked incoming Head Coach Adrián González. “Her vast experience in the Italian leagues and outstanding talent in the attacking third will contribute a new dimension for the Spirit as we move forward.
