Obed Vargas Honored With MLS All-Star Selection

Obed Vargas, a soccer player from Anchorage, is having an amazing year.

It started last October when he played for the Mexican National Team for the first time and then helped his club team, the Seattle Sounders, reach the MLS Cup Semifinals.

Last month, he even played against top international players, including someone he’d looked up to since he was a kid, at the FIFA World Club Cup. To top it all off, he’s now been recognized as an MLS All-Star.

“I am proud, obviously, to be there and to be recognized,” Vargas said to reporters before quickly diverting the attention to the club. “For me the most important thing is the team, that the team does well.

“I wasn’t like ‘oh I want to be an All-Star’ or anything like that, if it happens, great, but the most important thing for me is keep doing things well with my team and the rest will come.”

Nico Estévez, the head coach for the MLS All-Star team, chose 19-year-old Vargas to join the roster. Vargas will be the only player representing Seattle (Sounders FC) at the MLS All-Star event.

″He could’ve picked anyone in the league, he picked me and a few other guys,” Vargas said. “I am honored, I am grateful for the opportunity and for the confidence he put in me. I don’t know what made him choose me, but I am just happy.”

The MLS All-Stars, including Alaskan player Darwin Quintero and soccer star Lionel Messi, are set to play against the top players from Mexico’s Liga MX on Wednesday, July 23rd, in Austin, Texas.

“Just enjoy,” Vargas said of the upcoming All-Star match. “See new faces, new teammates, see how guys carry themselves around the league, it would be a good experience for me.”
