OFFICIAL: The 2019/20 Serie A MVP is….
The Italian Serie A announced today on its website the most valuable players of the 2019/20 season with the biggest surprise being the exclusion of last year’s MVP, Cristiano Ronaldo.

The annual awards are handed out to outstanding players in six different categories, including best forward, best midfielder, best defender, best goalkeeper, best young player and overall most valuable player. The awards were taken home last year by Sampdoria’s Fabio Quagliarella, Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, Inter’s Samir Handanovic, Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo and Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo respectively.
This year however, Ronaldo’s thirty one league goals were not enough to earn him a place on the list as his Juventus teammate, Wojciech Szczesny was named the best goalkeeper. Inter’s Stefan De Vrij and Atalanta’s Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez got best defender and midfielder respectively. Parma’s Dejan Kulusevski was voted young player of the year while record-equalling Ciro Immobile was named best striker of the season, somewhat confirming what we had in our Bettitude Team of the Season.
While it is normal to have the overall most valuable player from the title-winning team, it was surprising to see that Juventus’ top scorer with thirty-one goals was not named as the overall best player of the season, that honour went to his attacking teammate, Paulo Dybala who wins the award for the first time.
Dybala was important for Juventus this season as well with eleven goals and six assists in the thirty three games that he featured in.
Speaking on the awards, Lega Serie A CEO, Luigi De Siervo said “it was an anomalous year, with a compressed ending, but these players managed to demonstrate their talent in all the matches played, illuminating our competition with great performances. Our heartfelt thanks go to them and all the other athletes for their professionalism, commitment ,and sacrifices.”
Congratulations to all the winners.
