Atletico Madrid would be biding farewell to some of their players in the summer with Antoine Griezmann who has since harbored a dream to play in America reportedly in talks with MLS outfit LAFC but with his future yet unconfirmed, the potential departure of veteran defender in Axel Witsel is non-negotiable having seen his role reduced since the arrival of Clement Lenglet, Lee Normand and mainstay Maria Gimenez.

Axel Witsel’s time at Atlético de Madrid appears to be drawing to a close as the veteran Belgian midfielder contemplates a departure from the club. His role within the team has diminished significantly this season, leading him to seriously consider seeking opportunities elsewhere.
With his contract set to expire in June alongside a period of limited playing time, it is increasingly likely that he will pursue a new chapter in his career, aiming to regain a sense of importance on the field.

At 36 years of age, Witsel who previously played a pivotal role in the 2022/23 campaign has experienced a dramatic shift in his standing, transitioning to a player frequently left out of the squad. The arrival of fresh defensive talent including Clément Lenglet who is on loan from Barcelona and Robin Le Normand has pushed Witsel further down the pecking order, resulting in his absence from the pitch since January.
This prolonged lack of game time has also contributed to his exclusion from the Belgian national team during the recent international break. This development has solidified his resolve to leave the Metropolitano as he seeks a situation where he can once again contribute actively and consistently.

Addressing his future during an interview with a newspaper ‘Le Soir ‘ a week ago as per Mundo Deportivo, the Belgian stated; “An exotic destination like a Gulf country ? Frankly, I have no idea. I’ve already played in Russia and China . So I’m not closed to anything; on the contrary, I’m open to any offer. To be honest, my future doesn’t worry me too much. It’s always the same; it will depend on what’s on the table at the end of the season”.
With reports indicating interest from both Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States and the lucrative Saudi Pro League, the veteran Belgian midfielder remains open to the possibility of continuing his career within top-tier European football, he has emphasized that his final decision will be heavily influenced by the well-being and happiness of his wife and children. Thi
s suggests that factors such as quality of life, family integration, and educational opportunities will play a crucial role in determining his next destination, potentially outweighing solely footballing considerations.
