Oscar “Profe” Ortega Set To Leave Atletico Madrid With Immediate Effect Following Reported Bust-up With Diego Simeone

Written by Olaleye Oluwadamilola

Oscar “Profe” Ortega’s decision to quit Atletico Madrid was announced, and the team is now searching for a new fitness coach. Arriving at the team in 2011 with head coach Diego Simeone, the 65-year-old was supposed to leave when his contract expired at the conclusion of the season, but he is departing immediately.

More Details

Over the past 12 and a half years at Atleti, Ortega has been a prominent and well-liked character; but, in the last 12 months, his status has declined. Having worked with Simeone for more than 17 years as a coach, including at Catania and San Lorenzo, there have recently been rumors circulating that the pair’s relationship has failed.

It’s possible that Simeone’s insistence on Ortega’s contract not being renewed by Atletico Madrid had a significant role in the Uruguayan’s decision to leave at this time, as reports (via Forbes) have indicated.

Nevertheless, he can hold his head high because he has contributed significantly to the club’s success over the past ten years.

It has been abundantly evident over the past several months just how crucial Marc-Andre Ter Stegen is to this Barcelona team. Although the 31-year-old has faced criticism in the past several years, his absence has been felt greatly since Inaki Pena has not been able to perform on the same level as him, particularly in the previous few weeks.

Barcelona has given up a startling 19 goals in January alone, and they still have to play Osasuna on Wednesday night. According to Cadena SER, Pena hasn’t played poorly throughout this time, but it’s clear that club management no longer has much faith in him and doesn’t regard him as Ter Stegen’s long-term replacement.

That was intended to be Arnau Tenas, but he departed Barcelona last summer in order to join Paris Saint-Germain when the parties could not agree on a new deal. His departure casts significant doubt on Ter Stegen’s successor as the team’s goalkeeper when he finally stands down.

Barcelona will be happy that Ter Stegen is almost certain to return in the near future. The German goalkeeper has resumed training and is anticipated to rejoin the squad in the coming weeks.
