CF Montréal, widely considered the underdog, pulled off a surprising victory against favored Club León in their Leagues Cup 2025 opener on Tuesday.

After a 1-1 draw in regular time, with Prince Owusu netting a second-half equalizer for Montréal, they secured a dramatic 7-6 win in a penalty-kick shootout.

This upset earned Montréal two out of three possible points to kick off their Phase One play. “Today was one of our best games of the season,” interim head coach Marco Donadel said of CFMTL’s shock result.

Rodrigo Funes Mori scored the opening goal for León in the 11th minute at Stade Saputo, assisted by James Rodríguez’s cross. Montréal, however, relentlessly attacked León’s goal, eventually equalizing in the second half through Owusu.

The match then went to a penalty shootout, where León’s Sebastián Santos hit the crossbar in the seventh round, giving Montréal the win.

“I’m very happy with the performance,” Donadel said. “We always wanted to keep the pace very high, and they did a great job.”

Owusu, a standout in his first season with Montréal, scored the equalizer in the 62nd minute, expertly finishing a through ball from Dante Sealy.

This goal marks his tenth in as many matches across all competitions, making the former Toronto FC striker a key performer for Montréal despite their challenging MLS season.

CF Montréal, currently at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, has been under the interim management of Patrick Donadel since Laurent Courtois’ departure in March.
